A few of my favourite things

Here is a list of some of the things I like the most, its a real mix and in no particular order (except for the peanut butter, that is number 1 but so is the nuts and Spartacus and Ryan and ...)

NUMBER ONE! My sisters :)

(1) Peanut butter (Crunchy ofcourse!)

I started eating peanut butter as it is supposed to be a healthy snack, but every peanut butter I ever had growing up was always loaded with sugar so I never really understood this, until I met Whole earth PB. It is bladdy yummy, practically just crushed nuts! I eat this all the time, in my porridge in the morning, as a snack with Ryvita, as a pre-workout snack on a banana (My all time favourite), in a protein shake, in protein pancakes or even just by the spoonful before bed :) I have even got Ryan hooked as he has started having it daily on Ry vita! The only down side is that it is £3 for a jar and disappears quickly!

(2) Nandos Peri-Peri nuts

Oh I love Nandos, I never really went there before I met Ryan, but once we started it soon became a tradition/addiction haha. We started going there pretty much every weekend adn then the cinema after. I always have a 1/4 chicken with mushy peas and corn on the cob and Ryan normally has 1/2 chicken, spicy rice and corn on cob and I ALWAYs order peri-peri nuts to take away and this makes me soooo happy! I normally take the box into the cinema and munch away at them during the film. Whenever we pass nandos I always stop to pick some up and normally tell the person serving I love them if they put more than the supposed spoon full :) Ryan knows this is the ultimate thing to put a smile on my face!

(3) Spartacus

Ryan and I started watching Spartacus about a quarter way through the first series (blood and sand) I loved it straight off. Apart from the fast they all have amazing bodies, they story lines are addictive and you really get to love the characters! I cried like a real girl when Crixus died! I am so sad that there is only 1 episode left EVER! There have been 4 series altogether;
  • Blood and sand
  • Vengeance
  • Gods of the Arena
  • War of the damned
Ever the optimist I am, I always had hope there would be more or they will all survive and live happy ever after in the end, however Ryan the smart ass says the clue is in the title - 'war of the damned' yeah they all die! Cheers Ry!!! I love the series and want to get the box set as soon as they are all out!

(4) Mountain Biking
OK - not quite this extreme!
As mentioned in previous blogs, I started mountain biking about 8 months ago and I am starting to really enjoy it. I think the better I get the more I like it. I have a Boardman pro fs now with a hydraulic seat (goes up and down). We are doing black levels now which are more extreme and apart from the cost (mtb is an expensive hobbie) I am really enjoying it! We are going to Antur Stiniog in June, so I really need to up my skills and do a lot more practicing.

(5) Ryan

Haha, he's gonna hate this! But he knows he's my favourite :)

Beginning of fitness journey

Bit of insight into where my interest in fitness started ... As far back as I can remember I have always had insecurities about my weight, this probably stems from my darling brother! I was a chubby baby/child I guess, but he very kindly nicknamed me Oros - In South Africa, Oros is the name of the mascot for an orange squash. Although I was never overweight or fat in any way, it stuck with me that I was the chubby one - my sisters and brother are all skinny! I was a pretty average achiever. I always wanted to do more where athletics/sports team etc were concerned but was never great enough to stand out. I was the one that always went to practice but wasn't noticed, I preferred to mold into the back ground if I wasn't outstanding. I once did a race in primary school, the whole school was there to watch, I think I was coming like 3rd from the back and I didn't like it so pretended I hurt my foot so I didn't need to finish! Naughty naughty! I'm on the lef...

Fitness Motivation

I am so in love with the progress and physique of fitness model Jen Jewell  aka fitnessjewell! Article on bodybuilding.com She does a lot of the modelling for bodybuilding.com  and has done fitness competitions. Although her stats are NOTHING like mine and I could never look as good as her, she really motivates me to try hard and is living proof of what lifting weights does for a girl. Yeah OK, I know a lot of woman are frightened to lift weights for exactly that reason - they don't want to get big with muscles and look like the pic above, however that is what she looks like after intensive training, dieting, fake tan and pumped up for stage. Her body naturally is exactly what every girl wants and if they don't, they should!! What makes her interesting to me is that she hasn't always looked this way - it has actually taken 10 years, according to her bio for her to look like this. Admittedly a few years ago I probably wouldn't have l...

Running events

Ryan and I have done many running events in the last year or so and this is a run down of them all, ones I liked, didn't like etc. As I have mentioned in the thread Beginning of fitness journey , Ryan did the Mens Health Survival of the fittest  in October 2011, We then booked to do the 'Night Fright' on 26th October. That was my first run and it was horrible, extremely hard, apart from the fact it was hilly, I hadn't trained either! We then decided to do Nos Galan  - a 5k run in Aberdare town centre. This is a race which commemorates a Welsh runner who died at the event after doing a charity race. It is on New year eve at around 7pm, the atmosphere here was amazing! They have a celeb appearance - that year was Shane Williams. The only problem with this event is that given the time of year, the weather is always going to be bad! If I remember correctly, I ran this in 34 minutes and was quite happy with myself as it was my 2nd race and I still wasn't ta...
